Flying Lotus
“PATTERN + GRID WORLD”

We’re always talking about how jealous we are of the pace records were released in the mid 60’s. Back when the Beatles and Stones would trade blows with 2, TWO!, LP’s +, PLUS!, singles a year. That’s madness but that kind of pace must only help the writing process etc. We managed to get out both an EP & LP this year but it’s not easy. It’s one of the reasons we’re so in love with Flying Lotus; he just does not seem to stop. He’s back again this week with a new EP some 4 months or so after the release of his totally brilliant album, ‘Cosmogramma‘.

The new EP “Pattern + Grid World” is his most immediate release to date, jammed with quick blasts of songs most of which barely get past 2:30 min mark, almost as if they’re fit for a transistor radio or a malt shop and sock hop, albeit, in a rather schizo techno alternate 1965. Call it Beach Blanket Gizmo.

Swoony opening track “Clay” gives way to “Kill Your Co-Workers” and “PieFace”. Each is faster than the next with a jittery squelch of electronic punk spasms. “Jurassic Notion/M Theory” gets back the swoon before standout track “Camera Day” builds on a killer ascending melody ramming into “Physics For Everyone!” and volcanic surges of synth evaporating in a final 7-second surge.
